Devin Spraggins, a transient who has several addresses in the Bronx, was apprehended by US Marshals and New York Police detectives around 9 p.m., Thursday, April 6, for the attempted murder of NYPD Officer Brett Boller, age 22, of Hauppauge on Wednesday, April 5, said NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig.
Boller, a rookie and the son of Don Boller, a homicide detective with the NYPD for some 30 years, was shot in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, NYPD said.
A bus driver had flagged officers down after two men got into a fight over a seat, police said. When officers approached, the suspect fled the bus through its front door.
Boller chased Spraggin and caught up to him near Jamaica Avenue and 161st Street, where Spraggin fired a single shot, striking Boller in his right hip, police said.
Boller later underwent surgery and is expected to recover.
NYPD detectives were able to track Spraggins's movements by video surveillance and legwork and caught video of him getting into a black pickup truck that was working for Lyft. The Lyft driver dropped Spraggins off at a home in the Bronx, where police later found his sneakers, Essig said.
From that house Spraggins was tracked to a home in the Bronx where he came out with two other people and was taken into custody without incident, Essig added.
Inside the Bronx home, police retrieved a 9mm handgun, as well as ammunition, Essig added.
Spraggins was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon, and obstruction of governmental administration, Essig said.
He is currently being held for arraignment.
